How to Make a Double Welt Pocket

Creating a double welt pocket is a classic technique that adds both functionality and elegance to any garment. Whether you’re sewing a jacket, dress, or bag, a double welt pocket can elevate the overall look and feel of your project. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of making a double welt pocket, ensuring that you achieve a professional and polished result.

Materials and Tools

Before you begin, gather the following materials and tools:

– Fabric: Choose a sturdy fabric that complements your garment.
– Thread: Select a thread color that matches your fabric.
– Welt fabric: This is a narrow strip of fabric that will be used to create the pocket.
– Pins
– Scissors
– Ruler
– Seam ripper
– Sewing machine

Step 1: Cutting the Fabric

1. Cut the main fabric and the welt fabric to the desired size. The main fabric should be larger than the welt fabric to accommodate the seam allowances.
2. Cut two identical pieces of the main fabric for the pocket lining.
3. Cut a strip of the welt fabric that is 2 inches wide and long enough to wrap around the pocket opening, plus extra for seam allowances.

Step 2: Sewing the Welt Fabric

1. Fold the welt fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides facing each other. Press the fold.
2. Open the fold and press the edges to the center fold, creating a 1/4-inch seam allowance on both sides.
3. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise again, enclosing the pressed edges. Press the fold.
4. Sew along the open end of the welt fabric, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

Step 3: Attaching the Welt to the Main Fabric

1. Place the main fabric face down on your work surface. Position the welt fabric on top, with the right sides facing each other.
2. Pin the welt fabric to the main fabric, aligning the edges. Make sure the pins are placed evenly and securely.
3. Sew along the edges of the welt fabric, leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam.
4. Trim the seam allowances to 1/8 inch and press the seam open.

Step 4: Attaching the Pocket Lining

1. Place the main fabric face up on your work surface. Position the pocket lining on top, with the right sides facing each other.
2. Pin the pocket lining to the main fabric, aligning the edges. Make sure the pins are placed evenly and securely.
3. Sew along the edges of the pocket lining, leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam.
4. Trim the seam allowances to 1/8 inch and press the seam open.

Step 5: Closing the Pocket Opening

1. Fold the main fabric and the pocket lining back to the right side, enclosing the pocket opening.
2. Pin the edges together, making sure the pocket lining is tucked inside the main fabric.
3. Sew along the edges of the pocket opening, leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam.

Step 6: Turning the Pocket Right Side Out

1. Use a point turner or the end of a knitting needle to turn the pocket right side out.
2. Press the edges of the pocket opening and the pocket lining.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully made a double welt pocket. This versatile technique can be applied to various projects, adding a touch of sophistication and practicality. Enjoy your newfound sewing skill and the beautiful results it brings to your garments.
