Ingredients

Before you start, gather all the necessary ingredients:

– Lasagna noodles (about 12 sheets)
– 2 tablespoons olive oil
– 1 large onion, finely chopped
– 3 garlic cloves, minced
– 2 cans (28 ounces each) of crushed tomatoes
– 1 can (6 ounces) of tomato paste
– 1 teaspoon dried basil
– 1 teaspoon dried oregano
– Salt and pepper, to taste
– 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey
– 1 cup ricotta cheese
– 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
– 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
– Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with olive oil.

2. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

3. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

4. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

5. In another skillet, cook the ground beef or ground turkey over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess fat and set aside.

6. In a bowl, mix the ricotta cheese, 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese, and 1/2 cup of mozzarella cheese. Set aside.

7. Spread a thin layer of tomato sauce at the bottom of the greased baking dish. Place a layer of cooked lasagna noodles over the sauce.

8. Spread a layer of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by a layer of the cooked meat sauce.

9. Sprinkle a layer of mozzarella cheese over the meat sauce.

10. Repeat the layers, starting with the tomato sauce, then noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, and mozzarella cheese. Make sure to end with a layer of mozzarella cheese on top.

11. Sprinkle the remaining Parmesan cheese over the top of the lasagna.

12. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

13. Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
